Dead grass assassin bug - dorsal - Apiomerus spissipes

Dead grass assassin bug - dorsal - Apiomerus spissipes
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
August 13, 2014
Size: 16mm
Over the past week I have repeatedly seen this reduviid at the top of large clumps of dead grass. What's a reduviid doing on dead grass, where prey is not likely to occur? As I went to catch it for a photo, it raised its front two legs up and to the sides, exactly as I'm used to seeing salticids do in threat or territorial displays. I have not been able to get it to repeat the behavior, but I still have it in a container for now.

Bug is now spider lunch
Well, this bug is no more. I released it back on its clump of grass, and it flew straight into an Argiope aurantia web.
