Beetle Larva - Orchesia

Beetle Larva - Orchesia
Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
March 10, 2007
Size: ~ 6 mm
Again, don't know what type of beetle this larva belongs to. It always curls into a distinct 'C' posture as seen above. I have a few of these ones, and am hoping to raise them into adults to see what they will turn into. It's my first time trying to rear fungus-feeding larvae, so I'm not expecting to have much success. But I hope for the best, though.

premature guess
Hi Steven,

you sure have to rear this one, but I nontheless make a guess now: genus Orchesia (Melandryidae). Looking forward to the adult . . .

:-) Boris

Thanks, Boris
I'll do my best to rear these. This larva is one of two specimens that I've found in the fungus, but both seem to have vanished without a trace. Since they couldn't possibly have escaped from the plastic container that they were in, I assume they've burrowed deeper into the fungus. They produce A LOT of frass too!

It should be fairly easy to rear these.
Place the fungi in a ventilated (screened?) container and spray with a squirt bottle every other day. It doesn't hurt to let the fungus dry out for a time. Shelf and bracket fungus-living species are used to that. The greater danger is keeping the fungus constantly wet indoors because mold will set in, or else dry for weeks on end.

Happy fatherhood ;-)

Thanks for the advice :-)
My room is quite humid, so I was definitely concerned about mold! I'll try it out and hopefully come up with results. Thanks again!
