Dermestid Beetle - Megatoma variegata

Dermestid Beetle - Megatoma variegata
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
March 12, 2007
Size: 5mm
These 2 images are almost the same, but I think the second one shows the head details better than this one. It was sunning itself on the trunk of my Western Hemlock.

Yes!
This appears to be the same species of dermestid, most likely Megatoma, that has had experts scratching their heads. See discussion here.

Save it if you see it again, Cheryl. I'm trying to line up an expert to examine one or more of them. (A male would be nice since many beetles can only be truly IDed from the male.)

Cool!
I'll see if I can find it again. If I can, I'll take it and preserve it in alcohol. It was near a squirrel feeder, that also feeds pigeons and crows...perhaps it was eating feathers that are always around there.

Excellent!
Here's hoping...

Lynette just posted something
fairly similar, but we can't see the details
