A friend found this caterpillar in her yard today in Forest Falls, CA. We can't find anything like it searching Google. We'd love to know what it is. Thanks!

Wonder if it might be Panthea

Don't know which species you might have.
The other possibility is that it is a freshly molted Arctiid. Is it still around? We would be curious to know if it fluffed out as it dried.

Hi, John and Jane. Thanks for your response! My friend sent the following message today:

"...when I checked on him today, I found him in a web cocoon under the dirt. I guess we'll know soon enough."

So it would seem it's not a freshly molted Arctiid. She also mentioned it is about the size of her pinkie finger. She's going to keep an eye on it and see what it turns into. I'll update then.
