Umber Skipper pupation chamber - Poanes melane

Umber Skipper pupation chamber - Poanes melane
Alameda County, California, USA
July 25, 2014
For weeks, during daylight, the larva had occupied a horizontal, roughly tubular shelter it made by attaching living grass blades to dry loquat-leaf fragments that rested on the soil. The larva's head was at the closed end of the shelter; its anal end was visible just inside the opening. On July 24, the number of frass pellets on the floor around the "garden" had decreased to very few (I removed the frass every day), and a few particles of secreted white material could be seen on the small part of the larva that showed and on the shelter components nearby. The next day, as pictured, the shelter opening was covered by a curtain consisting of white strands and more of the particles.
