Evolution of my sad equipment

Evolution of my sad equipment
But I did want something I could use in the field, something more portable, and side shots don't work that well with my fence. I have a couple of "hoods" I've tried (half a vitamin bottle over the bug like a quonset hut) but the results are hit-or-miss.

How about an "all-in-one" system? I tried to build one this morning. First I borrowed the idea of Gary Fong's Delta Point and Shoot Diffuser.
1) I started with a plastic condiment cup (the bigger size).
2) I used a utility knife to cut a hole barely big enough for the extended lens.
3) I lined the inside edge with tin foil... like my hat :-) This is the "ring-light"
4) Then I took the circle I previously removed from the hole and taped it on one side to hold a couple of pieces of coffee filter as the flash reducer/diffuser (giving 2 layers of plastic and 2 layers of paper).

Of course this still needs a white background for the bug if you like that kind of thing.
