Slender Staphylinid - Erichsonius

Slender Staphylinid - Erichsonius
Sexaur Park, Brookings, Brookings County, South Dakota, USA
March 12, 2007
Size: 3mm
Slender staphylinid found amongst others in a snowmelt pool.

Erichsonius?
small size, and many punctures on lateral parts of pronotum indicate, that it may belong to this genus. To be confirmed by using a key.

:-)

Punctures
The punctures had hairs coming out of them, I couldn't get them to pick up in the picture, I basically just put my camera up to the eyepiece of my steromicroscope, so I don't get the greatest pictures. When I get a new scope, I'm planning to get a viewer for it.

Hmm, hmm,
"The punctures had hairs coming out of them" - that´s just like it should be in Erichsonius!

cheers, Boris

sufamily staphylininae. many
sufamily staphylininae. many staphs over winter as adults and when it's warm and sunny they become active under the snow in the leaf litter. sometimes they get lost onto the snow and that's when you find them, contrasting against the snow.
