assassin bug question - Hyalymenus tarsatus

assassin bug question - Hyalymenus tarsatus
Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
March 12, 2006
Size: 18mm
I'm just trying to find out what the "rubies" on the head are? I found 3 very different assassin bugs on one bush and all of them had these ruby red dots on them. Welcome to frass but I sure would like someone explains what they are first. Thanks. Arlon

Nice!
I wouldn't frass that photo. Nice picture of the eyes.

Not assassin bug.
This is a broadheaded bug, family Alydidae. Nice image, though.

Ocelli
They are simple eyes, also known as ocelli. They cannot form images, but can sense changes in light.
