Bombylius major
-
East Camino Cielo Road, Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
February 28, 2007
Edge of Chaparral - one of several males observed on this day. Seems to be missing a chunk of pile from the right thorax.

Recent rain and cold weather
had brought a dusting of snow to the Santa Ynez Mountains, some of which could still be seen on north-facing slopes (at only ~3000ft!). The sun - it was clear enough to see San Miguel Island! - gingerly started to warm the south-facing slopes.
B. major
must be one of the tougher bee flies, which may in part (my guess) may explain its wide distribution.
