Bombylius major - male

Bombylius major - Male
East Camino Cielo Road, Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
February 28, 2007
Edge of Chaparral - one of several males observed on this day. Seems to be missing a chunk of pile from the right thorax.

It's good to see they're out and about.
Was at Riley yesterday and wondered when they'd start to appear.

Recent rain and cold weather
had brought a dusting of snow to the Santa Ynez Mountains, some of which could still be seen on north-facing slopes (at only ~3000ft!). The sun - it was clear enough to see San Miguel Island! - gingerly started to warm the south-facing slopes. B. major must be one of the tougher bee flies, which may in part (my guess) may explain its wide distribution.
