Palpita? - Palpita freemanalis

Palpita? - Palpita freemanalis
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
August 10, 2006
Is this just a warn Palpita species or does it ring a bell? I say several just like it at the same time.

Aren't we lucky?
Just when I gave up and was ready to frass it --- this was ID'd as Palpita freemanalis (Hodges# 5225) by Brian Scholtens via Bob Patterson of the Moth Photographers Group site. Thanks Brian and Bob as well as J&J for convincing me not to frass it! :)

In Fairness to Brian Scholtens, let me point out that.....
... he hedged just a little due to Steve's location (a bit further north than available data indicated) while pointing positively to this species designation. Afterward, I found on Larry Line's website a specimen photo by John Glaser of a moth taken at Great Falls VA/MD, just upstream on the Potomac River from Washington, DC. This is about 100 miles north of Steve's locality, although many miles to the east of it. Finding moths a couple of hundred miles outside previously known range, especially in the case of species that are seldomly encountered, is not unusual. Hence, I suggested that Steve should go ahead and call it by this name. If there is any fault found in this, the blame should be mine.

Did you decide this was worn
and is now unidentifiable? Seems like a great image to have in the guide to help others if we can get it ID'd. After all, this is what those you saw looked like!

Okay
You win. I had uploaded another image this year that I realized was almost the same. Didn't want to clutter things up. But when you mention it: if I see the same pattern two years in a row during the same time period can I really just write it off as "worn"?
