Clivina (Leucocara) rufa LeConte

based on my microscopic examination of this specimen which is deposited in the P.W. Messer collection as a photo-voucher. Thank you Tom for this exciting new Wisconsin record which I added to the post-2012 caraboid registry!

If it weren't for the uniform rufous coloration (specimen appears redder than image), one would key this specimen to C. americana. Neither the literature nor I can cite additional external separators for these two species. The reddish coloration is too uniform to be mistaken for an immature C. americana in my opinion. This specimen compares well to my two other examples (MA, NY). I measured ABL 5.4 mm.

Could very well be enigmatic "Clivina acuducta"

rarely known in WI (see Bousquet 2012). Won't tell discriminating features here (see(1)) except to say: "Tom, can you confidently massage the ABL to be closer to 6 mm?". Larger body length would help nail "C. acuducta". In the end, I would like to have this specimen to examine/confirm and keep as an important reference specimen. I have 2 exx from MA, but have never seen one from WI! Astute suspicion by V. Belov.

Measurement

I took about 5 measurements and got a slightly different reading everytime (...), but my best guess is 5.7 or 5.8 mm. I'll update the entry measurement with whatever you get when I send the specimen to you :-)
I didn't think the pronotum looked like americana, so I guess I'm glad it's neither fossor nor americana!

fossor ruled out because of the nice coxal lines on ventrite 2

[americana has those but the gestalt is wrong]
no idea what it is... doesn't really fit any Clivina spp. listed by Peter for the state -- very intriguing
