Spawn of Satan insect - Urocerus californicus

Spawn of Satan insect - Urocerus californicus
Pierce County, Washington, USA
August 23, 2014
Size: 2"
I can't seem to figure out what this is. It scared me to death while painting the deck tonight, I hit it with the paint brush, that's why it looks paint-y. It was about 1 1/2 - 2 inches long, very loud buzzing sound as it flew. I have never seen anything like this before. Mostly I'd like to know if it's something I need to worry about and/or be grateful that it didn't bite or sting me. Sorry the images are not quite as professional as some of the others submitted, it was taken with a cell phone in a -very- shaky hand. Thank you!

Horntail wasp (stingless)
What is remarkable about this specimen is that it is probably just emerged from some dead tree, log, or stump, and the pigments haven't fully presented themselves yet. The insect should be black with yellow markings and orange or amber wings. Despite the fearsome appearance, it will not sting.

oh wow! Should this be someth
oh wow! Should this be something we should let our bug sprayers know about? We live on a very densely wooded property and I would hate to have a whole swarm of these guys pop out at me... it was huge! Thank you for the response!
