Minute Tree-fungus Beetle - Octotemnus glabriculus

Minute Tree-fungus Beetle - Octotemnus glabriculus
Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
March 10, 2007
Size: <1 mm
I found this Ciid while re-examining the polypore fungi that I collected last week. It is the smallest of the four species that I have found thus far, and came from one of the more well-rotted fungus brackets. It expelled a frass pellet just before I took this photo.

Octotemnus laevis
Dear Stephen,

this species is rather easy to identify by following combination:
- very small (less than 1.5 mm);
- body glabrous, neither hairy, nor with conspicous punctures;
- elliptical body shape.

Coulour in Ciids does not matter much; all species may need weeks to get fully couloured; when mature, this species is almost black also.

regards, Boris

Thanks so much, Boris
Very interesting to know more about these little beetles that I've found!
Cheers, Stephen
