No idea... - Agonopterix thelmae

No idea... - Agonopterix thelmae
Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada
August 12, 2006
Size: Wingspan 21 mm
This one's left me stumped for a while now. It's significantly larger than the other similar-looking species that I've encountered, so I suspect that it is a different species. I'm not even sure whether it is a Tortricid or an Oecophorid ... I always seem to have trouble distinguishing between those two families.

Oecophoridae
While both families tend to have similar wing shapes, tortricids rarely overlap their wings like this. The palps of tortricids tend to be straight and point forward or down, not strongly curved back like these.

Was this taken with a flash? Because I can't match the base color exactly with anything. The only match I find with an orange mark in the middle of the wing is Agonopterix thelmae

Thank you, Dennis
for clearing up my confusion between the two families.

I do recall taking this photo under a fluorescent desk lamp, but I don't remember whether or not I used flash. I probably didn't. That, combined with my inexperience with adjusting camera settings, led to quite a bit of discoloration of the subject. I remember that this moth was hard to color-edit. The real insect has a slightly darker base color with a hint of orange.

(When I said 'similar-looking species', I was referring to several moths of a different species which also looked like A. thelmae. This was one of them)
