Large orange insect with orange body and black wings. - Ophion slossonae - Male
Alstead, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, USA
August 24, 2014
Size: body about an inch
This insect was flying around our outside light and seemed to be eating the smaller insects flying around. It looked red in the light, but when photo was taken with a flash it looks orange.

not Ophioninae
I don't think this is even Ophioninae.

The abdomen is not the right shape nor is it laterally flattened which is characteristic of Ophioninae. As for the wings, the venation would be the key character to what this is but unfortunately it is not visible.

Wasp -- either braconidae or ichneumonidae, which each have tons of species. Someone else will chime in, or an editor will move the image to where it'll be seen by someone with more expertise. And welcome to Bugguide!

Thank you John! I have a couple other photos of the same insect if that would be helpful.
