drowned tree mites

drowned tree mites
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
March 10, 2007
Size: about 0.8 mm
Here one of the mites is crawling on the chunk of wood containing the fungus-lined cavity I found them in. All I picked out by eye were some small, immobile, but suspiciously uniform specks against the creamy fungus surface. A glance through my pocket loupe confirmed my supicions and I aspirated them into a vial.
