Has anyone done an ID paper/book on Hoverflies?

This is not exactly an answer to your question, still, if you didn't know if you click the help tab at the top right of the page, then click on books, at the bottom there is a list of all reference books that have been cited by various bugguide editors. You could do a search on the list for Syphid Flies, Syrphidae, Hover Flies (two words), Flower Flies...whatever you can think of.

I like your approach better, and I, too, would like to find out if there is a good book on Syrphid Flies so I plan on asking a few people myself. Maybe someone will add something more concrete.
