I'm pretty new to insect ids, but am trying to positively id everything I have seen in my yard. I tried to id it with my book but the different reddish meadowhawks are confusing. This was flying about 7pm.

Looks like...
a red female in the White-faced/Ruby/Cherry-faced trio, which are "impossible to distinguish... in field; must examine... subgenital plates in hand for certainty" (Paulson, D. 2011. Dragonflies and Damselflies of the East. Princeton Univ. Press, Princeton, NJ.).

Yes this is one of the difficult groups to get an ID to species
You really need to look closely at parts. It is quite possibly S. rubicundulum. Even the experts have a difficult time, sometimes even with the creature in hand!
