the shape of the cerci is different from those on a Shadow darner. Do you have a shot from the side? the shape of the stripes on the side of the thorax is the best field mark

Absolutely.
Shadow Darner has even smaller abdominal spots and the thoracic stripes on this beast are reduced to elongate spots -- Variable Darner.
