spiny little hatchling - Ululodes

spiny little hatchling - Ululodes
Near New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana, USA
September 2, 2014
Size: 4mm
We initially found what appeared to be eggs on our asparagus plants, but it looked different than asparagus beetle eggs. These were gray and there were two very neat rows of eggs (we are assuming they were eggs). We put them in a jar to watch them and a week or so later these little fuzzy insects hatched out. They have been out for a couple of days and have stayed huddled up on top of the egg casings. I shook a couple off so I could get individual pictures. The have huge pincher like things which reminded me of a stag beetle.

Nice! Welcome to BugGuide!

Owlfly?

looks right.
Never heard of it before. So is this a good insect to have in the garden or a harmful one? Edit: I just googled it and found that it feeds on soft-bodied insects in leaf litter. Maybe it will eat some of the asparagus beetle larve. :)
