possible Camposomeris quadrimaculata - Pygodasis quadrimaculata
The Villages, Sumter County, Florida, USA
September 2, 2014
Size: total length 1.4 inches
Several of these large wasps enjoying a Dotted Horsemint at 2PM on a sunny day. All but one looked like the one in this photo - a pair of bright yellow spots on the tail segments - the exception being one which appeared to have a small, indistinct third set of yellowish spots on the next tail segment (apologies for poor terminology). The second photo gives a better view of the tail spots. The wasp conveniently landed on a nearby screen so I am able to say the exact total length is 1.4 inches. Two concerns - a U of FL website states this as being found in southern FL - I am in central / north-central FL. Also, if the ID is correct, this is a scarab beetle parasite which again is stated as being seen often near the ground, and every time I see them they are on the horsemint. The wasp is a frequent visitor so if this proposed ID is wrong, I can try to pick up add'l ID clues if I know what to look for. Thanks!
