Hanging Thief Robber Fly - Diogmites

Hanging Thief Robber Fly - Diogmites
Arbor Lake on north side of Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, USA
August 30, 2014
Size: 3/4 inch
A number of these hunting the salt flats around Arbor Lake. Either perching in the tall grass along the edges of the pans or right on the salty ground. Tiger beetle nipped at the heels of one attempting to chase it out of the neighborhood. I'm assuming a Diogmites species.

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

Only
three Diogmites known from NE and this has to be angustipennis though it is very different from my local angustipennis. On salt flats in NE this could be an unknown species. This is a female. Would need a male to send to Jeff to assess that possibility.

Another
I did get a photo of another but I believe it is also a female. I can upload it if it would be helpful. Guess I will need to go back to get the male.
