Carrion beetles -
Oiceoptoma inaequale
-
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
March 13, 2007
Clustered on the hoof of markedly decayed deer. I came back a week latter and they were still there. Do I have the ID correct? No tubercles.

Probably right
I think you are right, but I don't see them enough well for be 100% sure. It could also be

I agree
most likely
O. inaquale
.
T. sagax
is not known from the U.S that far east, North Dakota is most likely the most eastern U.S extent. These two species are easy to confuse, especially in this type of image.

You are
probably correct. The pronotum is much more flattened laterally. I'll go back and see if I can document the blue.

I've just checked the data in
I've just checked the data in the book "The Carrion Beetles of Canada and Alaska" and the chance that it is
O. inaequale
are far away better than for
T. sagax
since this species is known to be active from Febuary in South (Maryland) and from April in Canada when the second species is known for be active only from May.
