Not What it Seems? - Synemosyna

Not What it Seems? - Synemosyna
West Ashley, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA
March 24, 2007
Size: 3mm
What seems to be a collection of Pseudomyrmex ants is not what it seems. The two on the top seem to be workers and the one on the right bottom seems to be a male reproductive. The cool thing is the one on the left... I thought it was another species of Pseudomyrmex in the field but looking at it at home I was thrilled to see that it appears to be a spider! A rather convincing mimic of the Pseudomyrmex ants! This stuff makes collecting so much fun! Are there any mimics of this genus in SC? The specimens were all collected by sweeping in low brush.

That
is cool!
Great image!
Your genus ID is correct, and they are noted as resembling Pseudomyrmex, but S. petrunkevitchi is known only from south FL.
Maybe a new record or a light variation of formica. Compare to the guide images.

Spider
After some research online it appears closest to the Floridian Synemosyna petrunkevitchi. S. formica, the other NA species, is black and is not very close to this one.

Very cool.
