Large caterpillar. Wondered about perhaps a Zale or a Catocala??

It is possible that this is what an early instar
Phyllodesma americana looks like. Just can't find anything to confirm that. We'll keep looking.

It certainly looks like the other photo from Washington. The BC list only has four Lasiocampinae: Phyllodesma americana, Malacosoma disstria, Malacosoma californica and Tolype dayi. We see all of them quite regularly as adults. It's definitely not a Malacosoma - we see those caterpillars quite often. Haven't seen a caterpillar for Tolype dayi and can't find a photo. The two red and black marks certainly look like photos of Phyllodesma americana, but the markings are different from any photos I've found - they're more blue/gray. Unless it's one of those species where there'a quite a bit of variation!

Looks like a western Lasiocampinae

But we don't know what you have out there.
