Mexican Honey Wasp - Colony #1 (8 of 9) - Brachygastra mellifica

Mexican Honey Wasp - Colony #1 (8 of 9) - Brachygastra mellifica
Schertz , Bexar County, Texas, USA
June 19, 2014
Size: Small
I am a local beekeeper and nature enthusiast as well as a wildlife artist. This year I started doing "Bee Removal/Relocation" as a service to those in my area that have a "bee problem" in areas where the bees are not wanted. This is the first Mexican Honey Wasp nest I relocated (to a safe area on my property). I've since brought home two additional nest like this one. They are all doing fine and pollinating the blooms in our area.

This series is being added because I think more information should be made available about these little wasp and hopefully through education, these and others will be relocated rather than exterminated.

I have been told they emit a spray when disturbed and that safety goggles should be worn when working with them. I have not experienced anything of that sort . . . yet.
My initial research suggested that even though they do produce honey, caution should be taken before eating it because it may be toxic. I have since talked to two different guys that say they ate the honey from these wasps and it was good and caused them no problems.

Please let me know if you have any questions or information to add to these images.
Thanks,
GD
