Fire-Colored Beetle (larva) - Dendroides canadensis

Fire-Colored Beetle (larva) - Dendroides canadensis
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
March 25, 2007
Size: ~1 inch
This creature was found under the bark of a fallen tree (the same one where the ants were found). There were really quite a few different insects, centipedes, etc. under the bark but I only managed to get satisfactory photos of a few. Since it looks like this creature has six legs, I am assuming that it might be the immature form of some insect?

Dendroides canadensis Latreille
This is the quintessential shot of what one sees around here when the bark comes off a dead tree a couple years after it falls. Here you see Dendroides canadensis Latreille beneath bark of the more exposed part of a dead log. A very typical scene for this part of the country (when it's not -30 F and one can actually get the bark off)! Nice image!

This is a pyrochoid beetle larva.
It looks like a species I haven't seen previously.
Compare.
