Round Sand Beetle - Omophron nitidum

Round Sand Beetle - Omophron nitidum
Sand Springs, Osage County, Oklahoma, USA
March 25, 2007
Size: 1/8"
Cool looking beetle. Although, I didn't notice the jaws when I was taking pictures of him and moving him around. Please advise species. Does anyone know what the jaws are for ?

I agree with Joe. I was also going to post that this was genus Omophron (round sand beetles). My reference doesn't have colored pictures of the species. Because this is a Carabidae, I'm pretty sure that the jaws are for catching prey - Carabidae are usually predators.

My reference says that these live in damp sand by lakes, rivers, and streams.
