Anthidium? - Anthidium palliventre

Anthidium? - Anthidium palliventre
Point Mugu State Park, Ventura County, California, USA
March 21, 2007
Saw this bee briefly in Giant Coreopsis, hence the pollen. Very elusive, quick to move off when I approached.
Looks like it may be an Anthidium species, or related Megachilid.

Anthidium palliventre Cresson
a sand dune specialist, best known from California beach dunes

previously recorded from Pt. Mugu (Grigarick and Stange, 1968:28)

most records are from the summer; March is unusually early to find this species

Good find

Thanks, John,
for the ID & information. Though we had unusual frost days this season, there were some hot Santa Anas; could this weather have made a difference?
