Moved from ID Request.

Looks rather to be a Sawfly larva
Do you know what plant it was eating?

I think it was eating leaves of native wild grapes.
I think it was eating leaves of a native wild grape species based on the not zoomed in picture. I am not experienced to tell which one but the common ones locally are Vitis labrusca. Vitis riparia, and Vitis aestiralis.

As I recall there were quite a few of them chomping away. Unfortunately, my camera needs servicing, while at the same time I can't bear to part with it, so this was my only non-blurry picture.

I'll post the full picture in case it is helpful.

Agree with grape...
... Vitis for sure, probably V. riparia.
