Historical note: Selenophorus "pseudoopalinus" placeholder
Selenophorus "pseudoopalinus" placeholder name tentatively only at BugGuide based on my re-evaluatuion of this specimen among a series of Texan beetles that superficially appear like an iridescent small S. opalinus. All are uniformly ABL ~ 8 mm (opalinus > 9 mm). Other differences from opalinus that I recognized early on include: punctulae on elytral intervals are sparser and finer, males almost always with exposed genitalia tips (almost always hidden in opalinus), apical plate of aedeagus is shorter and bent at the tip abruptly and nearly perpendicularly. This apparently undescribed taxon does not fit into the old key by Casey (1914:135-140).

I took the liberty of adding coined epithet "pseudoopalinus" to BugGuide in the hope of alerting readers to post additional examples. I welcome receiving specimens for the purpose of photo-vouchering and, more importantly, to contribute to my slow work-in-progress on writing a useful modern key to North American Selenophorus. Depending on feedback from others and my study of additional material, I realize that I may have to retract this hypothetical new species. Thank you Iustin for getting things started.

See the "Info" link above for updates on this work in progress.

UPDATE: This is Selenophorus undatus Messer & Raber, 2021.
