Entylia Carinat Treehopper with nymph under its wings? - Entylia carinata
Hopewell Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, USA
September 21, 2014
Size: ~ 5 mm
Not sure what's going on here. The adult moved around quite a bit and it was difficult to photograph. What appears to be a nymph, didn't appear to move at all.

Exuviae
More than likely a cast-off exoskeleton, as it is clear.

I like your idea.
The left-facing dark C shape behind the adult could be the body of the exuvia. Don't see any trachial tubes, but they could be hidden.

Common Occurence
Especially among insects with an incomplete metamorphosis. The freshly shed exuvia adheres to the body of the insect.
