Size: 15 mm
this beetle was on the Yocum Ridge trail on the Western flank of Mount Hood at elevation ~1150 m. The wings were rapidly moving akin to bumblebees. Its wings were buzzing as it walked on the trail. I guided it to a piece of tree bark for closer examination, but it flew away within a few seconds.

Looked like a Western Stump Borer to me, but 50% larger than the maximum size for males (42 mm). Found in a Palo Verde tree

Interesting record. I believe it has not been recorded from Massachusetts. I got this species in abundance from some trapping last year in the White Mountains, which was not surprising. This, however, is from coastal Massachusetts... a far cry from spruce-fir country. The Arboretum does have a lot of different species of spruce and fir though.
