This little guy has 1 1/4" long mostly translucent wings with a bronze iridescence, body of the same length, and clubbed antennae the same length (which means he's not a dragonfly). His coloring is a light brown with small black markings along the abdomen and maybe touches of yellow/gold. His thorax is "furry". As you can tell his abdomen is raised upward away from his perch. Wings are depressed and antennae straight out front.
I spotted him in the sun midday on a little copper decor in my yard. It's windy and I had a hard time catching a descent picture so I placed it closer to the tree trunk and tried again.

Robber Fly - Mallophora bomboides Juno Beach (Juno Dunes Natural Area), Palm Beach County, Florida, USA May 25, 2012 Size: 50mm
I could only get within 6 feet of this very large robber fly and the image is heavily cropped. It flew away when I inched forward. I have only seen a couple of these and never been able to approach one.
