After browsing the guide I think this is a female Southern Carpenter Bee, but I'd appreciate confirmation/correction. I took these shots in a light rainshower - it was enough to keep her from flying off, which was handy for me.

We are satisfied that this is in the genus Tmarus. We somehow happened to take a lateral view, which clearly shows the required features! If there is no comment to the contrary, it will be moved to the species page.
