Size: approx. 5mm
Found flying around in a flower garden. I looked through the hover flies here and couldn't find any with these markings.

Camponotus? - Formica podzolica - female
Camponotus? - Formica podzolica - Female
New Westminster, Lower Mainland, British Columbia, Canada
July 18, 2006
Size: approx. 10mm
2 of 2 images of this specimen.
Found in a flower garden, crawling over the flowers.

I don't know my ants, so my guess of Camponotus may be way off. I also couldn't find range information for most Camponotus spp. so I don't even know what the locals would be.

I was wondering if someone could ID this fly for me. It is a very large fly...I'm guessing close to an inch in length. When I go out at noght looking for moths, I tend to hear a lot of these. They are very loud, as they fly around the lights...my guess is that it is some type of horsefly, but I never see them during the day only at night.
