Found around building, probably seeking crevice to overwinter. Chilled, posed, and released for this photograph. This is probably a female, given that females (but not males?) overwinter.

While hiking on a grassy hill, I heard a loud low buzzing and thought I happened upon a beehive. There was approx. a 10' area humming with what I thought were a species of stout bees. Only upon closer inspection did I realize they were beetles! I think they were coming up out of the ground, many were crawling in the grass and leaves while others buzzed and hovered a few inches overhead.

One of my favorite insects, I love the way these fly with their legs splayed out. I found this one in my front yard at dusk.

This Water Boatman was collected by my friend, entomologist Faith Deering, from an 8 ft. vernal pond and photographed by me.

Faith collected quite a few water insects, which I'll be sure to post here.
