Water beetle larva? - Acilius
Water beetle larva? - Acilius

I found this larva in the soggy, rotting leaves at the water's edge at a small, shallow pond in mixed woods. Somehow it reminded me of some of Tom Murray's Water Beetle larvae. If that's what this one is, it is my first one. This larva twitches and thrashes violently and seems to mainly lie on its side in the rearing container. I wonder if it is ready to pupate.

Oh yeah, the others in the shot are a scaphidiine rove (right) and an Oxyporine rove (left).

This species is readily identifiable from an underside view. We've got gobs of images of them on bugguide. I'm posting a few atypical views here mainly as a vehicle for relating the story of my encounter with it.

I was digging a good-sized hole for a buried load of cow manure on top which I planned to plant some squash. Suddenly I saw a gleaming rich brown object my shovel had dislodged, the carapace of a large live beetle. As I picked it up I recognized it and soon figured out what it was doing there. A little more digging led me to the root of a nearby apple tree stump, obviously the home of this beetle during its grub phase.

Apparently this tuft of setae acts like a sponge to wick up sap or ripe fruit juices. It's about the only thing they equipped to eat as the mandibles are reserved for contests.
