I grew up with terrible nightmares of being covered in spiders under my covers. I would run quick to the wall & turn on the light, run to my bed and flip the covers up to see if there were any spiders under there. Of course, there never was, and so I wondered what the fear of them was all about. At five years old I began seeking them out, trying to keep them as pets, reading books about them & learning their personalities & behaviors. Once I got older, I read different types of interesting factual books and learned that what I thought were nightmares were actually hallucinations brought on by hypoxia stemming from sleep apnea. ...huh. My fascination with spiders started from these horrible nightmares, but were actually a medical condition (which, at 5 years old, I had no concept of) causing vivid hallucinations????? "I must be strange," I thought, "maybe even a bit crazy." Turns out many people with childhood sleep apnea describe very similar sensations...mine just happened to lead me to a life of books & self-education on a wide variety of topics relegated not only to spiders, but to pretty much all other creatures, and even to the science of the body, Aviation, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity & String Theory. I have no formal education on spiders or any other of my life interests, except for Aviation (I am a Private Pilot), I just thoroughly enjoy learning about spiders, cats and airplanes, and really everything in general I find to be perplexing.
