I have had a life-long fascination with the natural world. Born in Dublin, GA, I grew up on the Atlantic coast of Florida, near Daytona Beach. After graduating from Emory University in Atlanta, I earned a PhD with a focus on coastal ocean ecology at Duke University In Durham, NC. I was a research scientist at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island from 1974 to 1990. My husband, Barry, and I worked as a team researching salt marsh estuaries in Georgia, and then, after moving to Oregon State University in Corvallis, jointly studied upwelling ecosystems off Oregon, as well as arctic and subarctic marine food webs. After retirement, we moved to Central Oregon, near the resort community of Sunriver. We are both avid nature photographers. I became fascinated with butterflies in 2019, and have a project to photograph and ID as many species as I can in our local neighborhood.
