Botanist/ecologist with Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

I travel frequently across Iowa, both as a professional ecologist and an avid kayaker. I presently carry a shockproof, waterproof pocket camera (once Olympus Stylus 720 SW, now Olympus Tough), which enables me to always have it handy for spontaneous photo-opportunities of landscapes, plants, lichens, and insects. I live in a old farmhouse on a rural acreage near the tiny town of Ackworth, so many of my photos of insects are from habitats in my yard or of ones that have found their way into my house.

Here's an account of my first year on BugGuide.

I am a co-author of two natural history books pertaining to Iowa:

Deep Nature: Photographs from Iowa

The Guide to Iowa's State Preserves

Also a chapter in a book:
A Watershed Year: Anatomy of the Iowa Floods of 2008
