Chemist running native plant nursery, wife and daughter both biologists in nursery.
Camera is Pentax K-x with 70-300 Sigma APO DG lens. Sometimes on tripod, sometimes hand held, Bugguide sees only 2% or so of images. Most of our bees, many of the flies and butterflies have a "too close' range of about 3 feet. Macro on that lens does down to two feet. The Pentax does bursting and it's sports mode is decent. The Sigma is much better than the kit lens, but not always as good as needed. Focus depth is commonly 2mm and most California insect species are very fast and suspicious.
