Full name:
Kelsey J.R.P. Byers

Biography:

I recently completed my PhD studying plant-pollinator interactions at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, where I focused on monkeyflowers (Mimulus) and the role of floral scent in maintaining species differences via pollinator preference. One of my two species is pollinated primarily by Bombus vosnesenskii, so I'm particularly fond of them!

I'm currently a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, UK, where I'm enjoying the range of European Syrphidae and Bombus and focusing on Heliconius butterflies in my research. I was previously in Zürich, Switzerland for another postdoctoral position working on alpine orchids. About half of my time is spent in Panamá where I take particular delight in photographing the vast array of tropical insects, particularly Saturniidae.

Personal insect interests are flies (especially Syrphidae), bees (especially Bombus), and hawkmoths, but I'm really only very familiar with the syrphids, and fairly familiar with Bombus. Hopeless with beetles. But always pleased to see critters!

Amusingly, I am in fact fairly closely related to George W. Byers of crane fly and mecopteran fame. I guess entomology runs in the family!

Editors: Thanks for your patience when I mis-ID something. Learning from all of the experts on this site is amazing!
